TROY — In a drive to get guns off the streets, $100 gift cards will be given out from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday to anyone turning in a weapon in working condition.
The city’s third gun buyback this year at Missing Link Street Ministry, 3370 6th Ave., is a collaboration with city police and the Rensselaer County District Attorney’s Office.
All weapons must be safe and unloaded. Antique firearms, pellet guns, starter pistols and imitation guns are not eligible. Gun dealers will not be allowed to turn in firearms during the event.
“Some will say that statistically speaking, these programs won’t prevent crime,” Councilman Mark McGrath said. “However, we’d be remiss if we didn’t take every opportunity to secure as many guns as possible, thereby reducing the chance of them finding their way into the wrong hands.”
The chairwoman of the City Council’s Public Safety Committee, Councilwoman Nina Nichols, said: “We need to take every step necessary to curb gun violence in our communities and improve public safety.”
Donations may be made to the “Funds for Guns” account at Pioneer Savings Bank.
