Teen held at gunpoint fortunate to be safe after gun went off

SANDY — Police are searching for a man who held a 17-
year-old at gunpoint in Sandy early Friday morning.

At one point, there was a struggle and the gun went off.
Luckily, the bullet went clean through the boy’s shorts,
right next to his thigh, without even breaking the skin.

It started around 1:30 a.m. when the teen was leaving an
apartment complex. The suspect was out on the sidewalk and
asked the teen to take him to a nearby store, which he
agreed to. On the way to the store, however, the man
allegedly directed the teen into a neighborhood along 900
E. 8200 South, where he pulled a gun on the teen and
demanded his keys, phone and wallet.

The teen complied, but then there was a struggle over the
gun.

Jon Arnold, with the Sandy police, said, “As he exited
the vehicle, the juvenile, the victim, reached for the gun
as the suspect was exiting the vehicle. During struggle
over the gun, a round was discharged, narrowly missing
him.”

After going through the victim’s shorts, the bullet went
through the driver’s seat then lodged into the floor of
the car.

The teen told police the suspect got out of his car and
jumped into a dark colored Jeep Grand Cherokee and took
off. Police located that Jeep this morning and found the
teen’s cell phone inside, so they do know it was the
correct Jeep.

The driver of the Jeep was taken into custody and is being
questioned by police. Police say at this point the suspect
who was in the vehicle with the gun is still at large.
Anyone with information about this situation is asked to
give Sandy police a call.
