A Bayou George man is still sifting through the ashes of his home after a fire last Friday destroyed, but firefighers say that might have been avoided.
Firefighters were called out to the home located on Shores Road late Friday morning, but say they had no choice but to stand back and watch it burn to the ground.
When firefighters tried to approached the home, they were greeted with the sounds of explosions from ammunition which posed a danger to them.
If the ammunition had been in a fireproof gun safe, the outcome of the home might have been much different.
An expert from Panhandle Key and Safe says that any protection is better than none.
“We recommend you have some sort of heat protection especially a safe with a one hour fire rating or highter. Anything that’s much lower than that depending on the structure of the house and how far away you are from a fire department can have a much greater impact.,” said Tim Schroeder.
There are many different types of fireproof safes, and the more expensive the save, the better your guns, ammunition, and other valuables are protected.
